"Coal Country" tells the compelling story of modern coal mining, sometimes called mountain top removal (MTR), through the daily activities of working miners as well as those battling the coal companies in Appalachia. Their personal stories are the touchstone for the documentary’s exploration of the true cost of coal and the search for alternatives, such as wind, solar, and energy conservation. Are the people fighting MTR really protecting the earth or do they stand in the way of jobs in Appalachia and affordable energy for all Americans? See http://coalcountrythemovie.com/ for more information and to view the movie trailer.
What happens to the coal after it's mined and shipped off in long trains? There will be a very brief presentation after the movie on the downstream impacts of coal in terms of its effects on the air and water of our communities not far from coal-fired power plants.
There will be opportunity for open discussion among attendees.
We will also suggest answers to the question: What can we do?
