Dear Maryland,
The Maryland Sierra Club Chapter and local Groups are seeking candidates for our Executive Committees in this fall's Club election!
Now, more than ever, we need your talents to help the Sierra Club protect Maryland's environment for future generations. Elected Executive Committees of volunteer members run the club at all levels, setting environmental priorities; organizing education programs, hikes, and events; recruiting and communicating with activists; raising money; managing the staff and budget; and endorsing pro-environment candidates.
Find out more about the work of the Executive Committees, how to nominate someone, and other Club leadership opportunities here. The deadline for ExCom nominations is September 30, 2018.

Tell Governor Hogan that you Oppose Expansion of the Capital Beltway and I-270!
Your voice is needed to oppose Governor Hogan's $9 billion misguided proposal to add 4 express toll lanes each on the Capital Beltway and I-270, crowding our area with even more traffic, demolishing our homes, and destroying our environment. The deadline to comment is August 27th. TAKE ACTION Submit your comments now!
Community Solar has finally made its way to Maryland!
Sierra Club is excited to help support this innovative approach to decentralized clean energy generation. Some people want to support clean energy but live in apartment buildings or are not able to put solar panels on their roofs. We worked for legislation in 2015 so MD power companies will offer these folks the ability to buy into investing in solar power - and reduce their electric bills. Now everyone can finally sign up for solar power at a lower cost than the regular electricity bill! MD power companies will use these sign ups to get financing to build new solar panels. Over $70 million from Volkswagen Settlement Fund to reduce tailpipe pollution in MD
Maryland is to spend $70 million to reduce harmful smog-forming nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution from Volkswagen's emissions cheating scandal settlement fund. We will need to make sure Maryland spends this windfall to help polluted communities, invest in clean electric vehicle infrastructure, replace old buses and diesel equipment at the Port of Baltimore and other important efforts for a just society.

Tell Governor Hogan: Strengthen the Regulations to Address Antibiotic Misuse in Livestock!
In 2017, the General Assembly passed the Keep Antibiotics Effective Act to prohibit the overuse of human antibiotics in meat production. We're writing now because that legislation is in danger of being weakened by bad regulations.
More than a year after the bill became law, the Hogan Administration finally released draft rules to implement the law, and unfortunately the proposal is so weak that the overuse of human antibiotics on Maryland farms will likely continue. We only have 14 days to submit comments on the draft rules before they are final.

Anne Arundel Group Helps Advance Local Foam Bans
This spring, bills were introduced in the Annapolis City Council and the Anne Arundel County Council to ban the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) food containers by food service establishments.
The bills were modeled after the ban recently passed in Baltimore City. The county ban, if passed, would make Anne Arundel the third Maryland County to pass a ban on EPS food containers (after Prince George's and Montgomery). The Annapolis bill (O-22-18) is alive and on track. The Anne Arundel County ban (Bill 49-18) was passed but vetoed by the County Executive.
