The Deep Creek Falls at Pillsbury Crossing Wildlife Area near Manhattan, Kansas, is capped by a thin resistant limestone bed. Limestones, ranging from a few feet to tens of feet thick, form resistant layers that cap waterfalls throughout the Flint Hills region. These falls are some of the most under-appreciated scenic locations in the Flint Hills. Some of the higher falls display the colorful banded terrestrial mud rocks that underly the capping limestones, otherwise hidden under the prairie grasses.
