By Mimi Moffat, Kansas Chapter Communications
Sixty years ago Bob Dylan wrote this famous protest song, The Times They Are A Changin’. It’s still relevant today.
The Kansas Chapter has reached a critical inflection point as Sierra Club makes structural changes to balance fiscal responsibility with the needs of hundreds of employees and thousands of volunteers. The Kansas Chapter operates now as a volunteer entity with no staff, but the administrative responsibilities are burdensome for our active leaders. With proposed financial incentives included in the national Sierra Club budget and chapter funds saved by substituting dedicated volunteers for paid contractors, we hope to hire a chapter director soon.
But one staff member can’t handle all the administrative functions necessary to keep us in business. We need an executive committee of changemakers who will work on strengthening our chapter capacity. Administrative work is like cilantro - it’s not for everyone. You don’t have to be a member of our ExCom to be an environmental activist. If you are passionate about plastic pollution or solar energy or wildlife preservation but you don’t want to help with fundraising, financial bookkeeping, updating our Drupal website, or creating emails in Salesforce’s Marketing Cloud, then please join an interest team working on those issues.
We have core committees - communications, finance, fundraising, legislation, political - that require active, hard-working leaders. Sierra Club has policies and rules, lots of them. Training is available but there’s a learning curve.
Are you a strong advocate who’s not afraid to make waves? If you’re a problem-solver who thrives on challenges, we want you on our chapter ExCom. Our 5 geographic groups have their own executive committees with limited administrative functions. You can be elected to your group and/or the chapter ExCom, but you must sign up to be a candidate.
Apply here until August 22.
