The common sunflower, Helianthus annuus, a Kansas native plant, is our state flower. Sunflowers are found in every one of our 106 counties. You may grow sunflowers for their brilliant color but birds enjoy the seeds after the foliage browns. Keep the plants in place or harvest the seeds for winter feeding.

  • Plant a variety of native plants in your yard and garden
  • Reduce the use of pesticides on your lawn
  • Plant an organic lawn that does not use artificial fertilizers and pesticides
  • Buy organically grown foods that are produced without the use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers

For more information, see the Sierra Club Pollinator page.
