By Mimi Moffat, Chapter Nominations & Elections Chair
I'm looking for you if you're the person who will commit to using your brains, your passion, and your energy to serving the Sierra Club Kansas Chapter. It's a big ask, I know. But if you don't step forward, who will? You don't need to be a scientist or a lawyer or an engineer. I know you care about the environment and that's your strength. We have a Kansas legislator who thinks that climate change is Nazi propaganda. You know that's dangerous nonsense and you can speak truth to power. That's what we need.
Of course, that's not all we need. This Help Wanted plea is for Sierra Club members who have skills or are willing to learn the skills we need to manage our chapter. I'm talking about fundraising, data entry, website maintenance, news writing, spreadsheets, communications, membership, political action, and environmental advocacy. We can teach you if you're willing to commit to doing a job.
Our chapter members elect 9 executive committee members at large with staggered two-year terms. A limit of two full successive terms was imposed beginning with the 2018 calendar year. Five current ExCom members have terms which end this year and at least three members have said they will not run for re-election, including our esteemed chapter chair.
Our 5 groups also have executive committees who are elected by members of the groups. There are no term limits and the groups do not have the management responsibilities of the chapter ExCom.
The candidate application deadline of August 22 is approaching. Please go online right now to see the 2023 Election Schedule and the Candidate Application form. I can't wait to meet you and find out who you are and how you're going to help the Kansas Chapter of the Sierra Club educate, advocate, and litigate to protect the environment.
