Sunday Speaker Series
April 28: The Cicadas Are Coming
This year, Lake County residents will be treated to an amazing natural convergence of emergence that happens only once every 225 years. Let's put that into perspective: The last time such an event occurred, Thomas Jefferson was President of the United States and horse-drawn buggies were the main mode of transportation.
Conservation education specialist Nate Szkil of the McHenry County Conservation District will join us on April 28 to share the natural history of the 17-year cicadas (Brood XII) and the 13-year cicadas (Brood XIX).
Register to join us on April 28.
In mid-May to early June, billions of these cicadas will begin burrowing up out of the ground and crawling onto bushes and tree trunks. Shortly thereafter, the males will begin singing love songs to attract mates. In doing so, they will treat us to a major, memorable performance.
Trust us, we will all be aware of these marvelous insects! Fortunately, we will hear from Nate why these astonishing insects will not harm us or our gardens.
Nate’s presentation is another in a series of family-friendly nature and environmental stewardship talks sponsored by the Woods & Wetlands Group. Programs are held at 7 p.m. one Sunday per month. They are free and open to the public. Advance registration is required for login instructions.
