Two years ago, Illinois became a national leader on climate action when it set the goal of 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050. Complicating our chances of success, however, are local bans on certain types of wind and solar energy systems.
Here in Lake County, Kildeer is one of a few communities that ban many types of solar energy systems.
The village’s 2020 ordinance prohibits freestanding or ground-mounted solar energy systems as well as solar farms and solar gardens serving multiple households. It allows only integrated roof-mounted solar energy systems that produce energy intended primarily for use on the property.
This ban prevents Kildeer residents from realizing significant energy cost savings, according to resident Mike Zanillo. It also may reduce property values, making homes less attractive to a segment of potential buyers who expect solar panels to be an option.
Challenging the ban
Now some Kildeer residents want to challenge the community’s ban on certain solar energy systems.
To learn more about the benefits of solar power and/or challenging the ban, please attend a free informational meeting on Tuesday, August 1 at 7 p.m. at Ela Area Public Library, 275 Mohawk Trail (Second Floor Conference Room), Lake Zurich. A Zoom option is available.
