NRG to Discuss Plans for Closing Coal Ash Ponds in Waukegan

Waukegan Coal PlantNRG will hold two public meetings in December to discuss its draft application for permits to close two ash ponds at the coal-fired power plant on Waukegan’s lakefront.

The meetings are required under Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) rules for enforcing the Coal Ash Pollution Prevention Act. They offer important opportunities to ask questions and weigh in with the company about its permit applications.

Public meeting dates:

  • Wednesday, Dec. 15, 6–8 p.m. CT
  • Thursday, Dec. 16, 10 a.m.–Noon  CT

How to participate:

These will not be the only opportunities to weigh in on the closure permits. There will be comment periods once Illinois EPA issues draft closure permits. There also may be public hearings on those draft permits.
