Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot released a new Climate Action Plan for the city with 51 goals to be met — the fourth such plan to be introduced by three Chicago mayors over a little more than a decade.

Clean energy advocacy organizations and concerned residents held a rally outside the utility company’s offices in Springfield Wednesday morning demanding protection for customers and the power grid.

"This organization, plus its offspring projects and organizations, can be said to have originated environmental awareness in this region," said one of the PPG's founders, Richard C. Keating.

"Illinois is now leading the way to a clean energy future, and it's time to hold polluting coal mines accountable for what they have done to our communities and say enough is enough,” says Director Jack Darin.

"We must demand that local, state, and federal officials stop this pipeline in its tracks,” writes Nick Dodson, Chair of the Sangamon Valley Group.

“[The Metro East and really Illinois are] at the center of the country, which makes us home to more miles of fossil fuel pipelines than most other states, putting our communities at risk,” said Hannah Flath of Sierra Club Illinois.

An environmental bill that would require the removal of pollutants near the shores of Lake Michigan is advancing in the General Assembly.

“The state of Illinois has a responsibility to protect these communities, to make sure that this disaster isn’t replicated across the state,” Sierra Club Illinois Director Jack Darin said.

“The use of firefighting foam containing toxic PFAS chemicals at Sugar Camp mine is the latest reminder that Illinois must move beyond coal and transition to a safer, renewable energy future,” said Jack Darin, director of the Illinois Sierra Club.

Representatives from the Sierra Club of Illinois and 18 partner organizations showed up on Thursday with 2,000 signatures of local residents who are against the plant's construction, and urged the IEPA to deny the facility's operating permit.
