A grassroots proposal... is gaining traction to transform the 289,000-acre Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois into a national park and the nation's first climate preserve.

A planned carbon-sequestration pipeline that would go through much of west-central Illinois is on hold, at least temporarily.

“[The Line 5 pipeline] poses a massive threat not only to our region but to our continent. Scientists have said this is the worst possible place for an oil spill, and it’s so close to happening,” said Tessine Murji of Sierra Club Illinois.

The 3M chemical manufacturing complex released 73 tons of perfluoromethane (CF4) into the air in 2021, more than any other facility in the country.

Sierra Club Illinois, Openlands, and Just Say No to Northpoint have won a major victory won an in their fight against the proposed NorthPoint Development industrial park in Will County.

“This proposed pipeline is a false solution to the climate crisis we’re facing today,” said Ann Baskerville of Sierra Club Illinois.

Environmental groups, such as the Sierra Club and League of Conservation Voters, backed candidates [for governor] in hopes of having their environmental priorities enacted.
