Future's So Bright: Good News About Climate
Recent changes give reason for hope in the midst of what used to be a minefield of despair. The past few years have seen climate activism, led by youth and people of color, that has transformed mainstream climate policy conversations that now routinely include social justice and racial equity as foundational elements. Climate denialism has largely receded.
At the same time, changes in solar, wind and battery technology are nothing short of staggering with huge implications for clean energy solutions. Technical and economic shifts have been so rapid and so dramatic that most of us, including many politicians, aren’t fully aware of the opportunities. The technical and economic barriers that existed in the past are no longer relevant; the only hurdle that remains is political.
What does that mean for those of us living in North Central Florida? How can we best accelerate the clean energy transition in our communities?
About the speaker:
David Hastings is a senior-level marine scientist with three decades of experience in scientific research and teaching. Dr. Hastings has written dozens of scientific publications on climate science, plastics in the marine environment, paleoceangraphy, and impacts of the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill.
His work involves producing and using the best science, is inspired by environmental sustainability, and is grounded in social justice and equity. He focuses on solutions, not simply describing the problems.
Following a meeting with Gov. Rick Scott on climate policy, he was selected as “Science Champion” by the Union of Concerned Scientists for “speaking (scientific) truth to power.”
