Author Submissions

How to submit written content and images for newsletter articles, social media, web blog posts, print, events (on our Calendar, Meetup), etc.

Training for Authors Who Do NOT have write permissions

To author anything, simply do your best to format your article or post as much as possible in some authoring format that you are comfortable with. Microsoft Word,Google Documents, or even just a formatted email are great choices to make it relatively easy to transfer your images, colors, and other formatting into HTML format.

Then send your email to the correct Sierra Club leader(s). (find their contact info on the Leaders page)

  • newsletter articles — send to the leader responsible for newsletters (currently Sarah Younger)

Tip: many newsletter articles will also appear as blog posts when the newsletter gets published. If you want your blog post published sooner, then say so, and cc the webmaster.

  • blog posts — for now, send all blog posts to our webmaster (Dean Ziegler)

Eventually, other leaders will have write permissions to post their own blog posts related to the web pages that they author.

  • social media posts — send to the leader responsible for social media (currently Tim Martin)

or... simply post your message to your own network, and send Tim a message suggesting to relay your message to the rest of our network of local Sierra Club social media influencers.
Wanna be an influencer? Use the volunteer form.

Along with your content and images, in your email, also:

  • Clarify whether your content is for a newsletter article, blog post, social media post, all of the above?
  • If a blog post, specify in which page(s) the blog post should appear.
(or better yet, specify the taxonomy code(s) if you know them)
  • Attach optional images.

Send images as email attachments. (Don't embed within your text)

  • Clarify image permissions.
Perhaps attach your completed Sierra Club Content Submission Form (found on the Forms and Waivers page of the Sierra Campground site),
or (better yet), explain that you already uploaded your images to the Sierra Club shared image library using the 'canto' form,
or perhaps explain that an image came from a public government site, etc.
If needed, also attach Photo or Video Model Release Form (also found in Forms and Waivers)
  • Clarify copyright permissions.

Unless otherwise specified, any content that you author is subject to standard copyright law.
You can, however, specify to release your work using any one of the Creative Commons Licenses

  • Provide additional details for any event that needs to be added to the Sierra Club Events Calendar
(or better yet, clarify that you already edited your own Calendar Event)

Tips for All Content Authors

Images — Tips

Sierra Club suggests that we get written permission for all images that we use for any public purpose, and requires written permission for any photos of minors, and any photos used for fund-raising, using the Photo and Video Model Release Form (found in the Forms and Waivers page of the Sierra Campground site).

Sierra Club has a library of stock images that we can use, with easy-to-use features for cropping, resizing, and more. Ask webmaster to learn more.

To give Sierra Club permission to use photos that you own, you can use either the Sierra Club Content Submission Form (found on the Forms and Waivers page), or (better yet), you can grant permission and upload your images to the Sierra Club shared image library using this 'canto' form. (Either way, permissions are granted per batch of photos. There is no blanket release for every photo that you ever take.)
