In Setback for Enbridge, PUC Rules Line 3 Review is Inadequate

Whether it moves by pipeline, by rail, or by tanker, tar sands and other oil is polluting, highly combustible, and dangerous to communities and our climate. In order to avert the worst of the climate crisis and protect our communities from devastating explosions and oil spills, we must stop the industry from building any new oil infrastructure. After more than a decade of advocacy, legal challenges, and organizing in partnership with local communities along the pipeline route and across the country, we successfully blocked the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. Now we are continuing to apply those same tools to winning fights against other pipelines, oil train terminals, and oil export facilities across the country.

Today, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) issued orders on the controversial Line 3 tar sands pipeline deeming their latest environmental impact statement adequate, despite the fact that it downplayed the risks to Minnesota’s water resources, and reissued the certificate of need and route permit for the pipeline.

Austin, TX -- The Sierra Club filed a lawsuit today against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for permitting the ongoing construction of the 428-mile Permian Highway fracked gas pipeline, despite a federal court order vacating the nationwide permit on which the pipeline’s 449 water crossings are based, and for not performing the environmental review required under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

Salt Lake City, UT— Ahead of Utah’s June and September Bureau of Land Management (BLM) oil and gas lease sales, Utah organizations called on BLM Acting State Director Anita Bilbao and Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt to suspend public comment periods, rulemakings, and other actions as communities face the coronavirus crisis. In the letter, the groups noted that, given the current public health crisis, communities are focused on their immediate needs and health— making it difficult to meaningfully participate in the public input process.
