Candidate Statements

Martin Greenberg – Last year I moved to Beacon, NY. I switched from a passive member of the New Jersey Sierra Club to an active member in the MH Group, I was an active participant in the Friends of Liberty State Park, in Jersey City. Since 1990, I have worked as a commercial real estate appraiser. It has exposed me to zoning, flood and wetlands, etc. In 1972, I graduated from Pratt Institute, School of Architecture. During summer recess, I attended programs at Cosanti Foundation in Arizona with visionary architect Paolo Soleri, and at the Wright Ingraham Institute in Colorado. I had a business in 1976 installing solar heating systems. My wife and I and our two kids also own a “retreat” house/Airbnb on 3.5 acres of forest with a creek in Cairo, NY. I have enjoyed community civic participation and served as treasurer in my NJ neighborhood. I look forward to working with a team of like-minded people devoted to a clean earth.

Sarah Kennedy - Our unique environment, which includes the Hudson River Valley and the Shawangunk Mountains, deserves our protection and careful stewardship. I grew up in northeastern Ohio where I developed a deep love for nature, especially enjoying winters in the snowbelt. After graduating from Vassar College, I chose to remain in Poughkeepsie where I began my career with Dutchess County, retiring in 2016 as a Senior Probation Officer. I have long been a supporter of Hudson Valley environmental groups and upon retiring, began to volunteer for some local environmental projects. This led me to become a member of the Mid-Hudson Sierra Club’s Executive Committee. I am completing my second term. I am currently serving as the Volunteer Coordinator and the Political Chair.

Karen Schoemer - My introduction to Sierra Club activism came when the Mid-Hudson Group supported Summit Lake Conservation Group (SLCG) in its 2022-2023 battle against a high-end housing development on the wooded slope above Summit Lake in Philmont. SLCG won two Article 78 lawsuits against Philmont and the developer, and the land is intact today. As a poet and writer, I am passionate about the conservation of local habitats, species and landscapes and welcome the opportunity to continue to serve on the Ex Comm with a focus on publicity, social media and programming. Climate change and the affordable housing crisis in the Hudson Valley are putting ever-greater pressure on our natural areas and our rural, agricultural way of life. I hope the MHG can engage newer generations about these higher-stakes environmental realities. In addition to my continued volunteer work as a member of SLCG, I serve on a working group for the Philmont Rising municipal revitalization program. I have a part-time job with a historical renovation company in Athens, New York; perform and record with several bands; and, through my personal social media accounts, advocate and fundraise for more than a dozen families in the Gaza Strip.
