Southern California’s wildfires have been relentless this season, threatening not only communities but also some of the cherished landmarks that the Sierra Club has preserved for decades. Our three historic huts and lodges — Keller Peak Ski Hut, Harwood Lodge, and San Antonio Ski Hut — stood resilient in the face of these dangers, thanks to the efforts of firefighters and a touch of luck.
Keller Peak Ski Hut: A Close Call with the Line Fire
Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, the Keller Peak Ski Hut faced a serious threat from the Line Fire. As the blaze advanced, the community braced for potential loss. Fortunately, cooler weather and favorable winds helped keep the flames at bay. The hut’s Facebook page expressed relief: “It does appear the hut has dinged the danger as the cooler weather, good winds, much luck, and amazing firefighters have played a role in preventing further spread of the fire toward the hut.” As we celebrate the Autumn Equinox, it’s a joy to know that residents and visitors can once again "climb the hills and get their glad tidings.”

Harwood Lodge: Safe from the Bridge Fire
Harwood Lodge, situated in the Mt. Baldy area, was at risk as the Bridge Fire spread across the region. On September 21st, evacuation orders were lifted, and we received the good news that the fire had not impacted the lodge or any of the nearby cabins. One of our Board Members, who owns a cabin near Harwood, personally checked the area and confirmed that “All are good.”
With Harwood Lodge safe and sound, we’re excited to open our doors. We invite you to join us for the Harwood Lodge Oktoberfest Fundraiser on the weekend of October 5th. Enjoy clear mountain air, hiking, music, relaxation, blue skies, and beautiful mountain views. Musicians, bring your instruments; newcomers are welcome! And for those who want to give back, consider joining us for the Work Weekend on October 27th, from 10 a.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. Sunday, for lodge maintenance projects. All are welcome, but registration is required.

San Antonio Ski Hut: Surviving the Threat and Looking Ahead
Located halfway up Mt. Baldy, the San Antonio Ski Hut also faced the threat of the Bridge Fire. While the fire never came close enough to cause damage, the Forest Service has closed the trail to the Ski Hut due to safety concerns. This closure is currently set to last through December 31, 2025. During this time, we’ll be working diligently to conduct maintenance and monitoring to ensure the hut remains in good condition and ready to welcome visitors once the trail reopens.
Looking Forward
These lodges are more than just buildings; they are sanctuaries for nature lovers and adventurers, steeped in history and surrounded by the beauty of our local mountains. As we move forward, we remain committed to preserving these places for future generations. Let’s continue to support our lodges and the brave firefighters who help protect them. Together, we can ensure that these retreats remain safe havens in the wilderness, offering solace and adventure for all who visit.
