Are you the kind of person who enjoys perusing bookshelves? Do you have an interest in Angeles Chapter archives and history? Does organizing and caring for one of the largest collections of books in the Sierra Club sound like your idea of fun? Do you want to help create library events and a community for members?
The Angeles Chapter library contains full sets of Sierra Club Bulletins, Southern Sierran Newsletters, Schedules of Activities, Sierra Club Publishing House publications, original first edition John Muir books, signed books, and more. It houses the chapter archives as well as framed photos and rare books on mountaineering and environmentalism.
Until recently, the library had been closed due to the lack of a volunteer librarian. In the winter of 2023, an Outings participant and library aficionado Nguyen Tran began serving as our volunteer Chapter Librarian. Nguyen has taken great care to organize the Library for both the preservation of our collection and for the enjoyment of members. In June of 2023, the Chapter Library reopened and has since hosted two events, where members left feeling inspired to support the library.
The September Library event hosted by the Angeles Chapter showcased a presentation by Liz Pomeroy, a former chair and life member of the chapter. She delved into the remarkable life of Glen Dawson, a celebrated 20th-century Californian known for his globe-trotting adventures in mountaineering and his deep passion for literature.
The Library Committee would exist to preserve the Angeles Chapter Library, to develop its use as a member benefit, and to raise money to support these objectives. With the guidance of our volunteer Librarian, preserving includes documenting the Library inventory, the informed care of the contents, and discerningly acquiring resources that enhance and protect the Library.
We plan to meet as a new committee this year!
Let us know if you would like to be part of our new Library Committee by emailing our volunteer Chapter Librarian, Nguyen Tran.
