Pro-Cyclist Phil Gaimon Hosts Events in Support of the Angeles Chapter

Phil Gaimon, who refers to himself as a retired pro-cyclist (he calls it the “worst retirement ever”), is passionate about many things including cycling, his lovely wife, his adorable dogs, cookies, and the environment.

Phil connected with us last Fall just as he was preparing for “Phil’s Cookie Fondo” one of the largest and most fun gravel cycling events in Los Angeles County. His concern: climate change. Since then, Phil has relied on us to share what the Angeles Chapter is doing to combat the effects of climate change and prevent further damage to our planet. It’s clear he trusts our efforts and sees the results as meaningful and worth increasing support.

As an author and influencer, Phil has the means to reach thousands of cyclists and fans who can join the Angeles Chapter as members, donors, and volunteers. Phil and his audience have asked great questions, such as:

“Is the Sierra Club favorable to the cycling community?”
“What is the Sierra Club’s position on nuclear energy?”
“Can we realistically reverse the effects of climate change?”
“How do we reduce carbon emissions?”

Supporting the Angeles Chapter at Cycling Events - Volunteers Needed!

Join us in embracing an audience that is eager to learn more about what we do. Come volunteer with us - and share your passion for the Sierra Club - at Phils’ Cookie Fondo this year on Oct 28-29  and next year at Whiskey Tango Fondo on April 28. By the way, the cyclists LOVE volunteers. Come volunteer on one or both days of the Cookie Fondo, for a few hours or all day. Wear your Sierra Club shirt or hat, and let them see how much we care about them, too!

Phil’s Cookie Fondo is a gravel cycling event up in the Santa Monica Mountains during the weekend of October 28 and 29. Phil’s Fondo is his chance to show off the great climbs, ocean air, and perfect weather, to help Los Angeles get the reputation it deserves as a world-class cycling destination. Phil designs the courses himself, collects rider gifts from his favorite sponsors, invites his pro friends, and has an incredible post-ride meal thanks to local celebrity chefs. With 10,000 gourmet cookies on course, the food experience alone would be worth the price of registration. We need lots of volunteers! Can you help? This year, the Angeles Chapter will host a booth and is invited to volunteer at aid stations along the route. The event includes an auction in which a portion of proceeds will be donated to the Angeles Chapter. Sierra Club volunteers will help boost bids by letting participants know about the auction. With thousands of cyclists and their friends & family attending the event, this is a great opportunity to raise money and invite people to join the Sierra Club. Phil has generously offered to donate per volunteer who signs up to work a shift at an aide station. Volunteers can sign up here: https://www.philsfondo.com/volunteer

Looking ahead! Phil is once again hosting Whiskey Tango Fondo, a thrilling gravel cycling event in the Easter Sierra on April 28, 2024. We attended this event last year along with the Range of Light Group, and it was a blast. The Angeles Chapter hosted a s’mores and whiskey campfire gathering the night before the ride. It was so much fun to set up camp and meet the cyclists, who were so interested in learning about the area and how they can participate in protecting the planet. We set up a booth at the festival and got to meet so many neat people (and their dogs!). Last year we raised over $2000 at the event, and we hope to double that amount in 2024! If you would like to join the Angeles Chapter crew at this event, as a volunteer or cyclist, let Jennifer Gregg know at Jennifer.gregg@sierraclub.org
