Sierra Club Angeles Chapter leaders and supporters gathered on May 1 at Friendship Auditorium in Griffith Park to celebrate its 2019 awardees. More than 100 members and supporters came together to recognize our volunteers, whose efforts to explore and preserve wild places attest to the chapter’s resiliency in the face of overlapping crises to our climate, health, and democracy.
The Annual Awards Banquet attracted an impressive turnout of Club members eager to congratulate friends and show their support. Keynote speakers Sharon Koch, Dyana Peña, and Morgan Goodwin spoke passionately about how the Chapter has navigated these past two years, the importance of our mission, and the work of the Club. The Audience also heard from Assemblymember Al Maritsuchi, D-66th District, and thanked him for his crucial legislative work standing up to fossil fuel interests.
Throughout a festive afternoon, the Angeles Chapter recognized invaluable contributions by our most dedicated volunteers and staff. Over 50 volunteers and chapter entities received awards for their service.
Recipients of the Chapter’s highest honors were Don Bremner (Lifelong Service Award), Al Maritsuchi (Special Public Policy Award), Joan Jones-Holtz (Donna Specht Fundraising Award), The Central Group (Membership & Fundraising Service Award), Shawnte Salabert (Special Media Award), South Bay Parklands Conservancy (Special Conservation Award), Hundred Peaks Section (Citation of Merit), Patrick McKusky (Extraordinary Achievement Award), Ray Hiemstra (Emil Lawton Political Service Award), Keith Martin (Chester Versteeg Outings Award)
