Thanks to your support, we excitedly share that the West Hollywood City Council unanimously passed the single-use plastic ban ordinance!
On January 18, 2021 representatives from the Sierra Club, Angeles Chapter Sustainability Committee provided public comment in support of the single-use plastic ban ordinance. This was championed by your passion and voice - and our voice was heard!
The Sierra Club Sustainability Committee worked hard with supporters and legislators to advocate for this change. Our commitee members led outreach to local businesses and orchestrated a coalition of partner organizations to write a letter of support endorsing the ordinance (thank you Oceana, UniteHERE, Surfrider). We also worked directly with West Hollywood City councilmembers to draft the ordinance language to include critical compostable verbage, garner their backing of the issue and provided valuable data to counter common misconceptions or concerns. These efforts cummulated in a unanimous pass during a January city council meeting where members of the Sustainability Committee made public comments in favor of the ordinance.
The City Council Members and Mayor unanimously passed this ordinance, and the good news doesn’t end there. The ordinance was passed implementing our recommended language to ban all non-BPI certified compostable plastics AND putting the ban into effect beginning January 1st, 2023, a full six months earlier than originally suggested! We could not be more grateful and appreciative of your support in this effort and are proud to share this collective win with you as it creates real-world change to reduce waste and protect our planet.
However, our work does not end here. With your help, we will continue the fight for positive change for our environment and communities as we build a more sustainable future for all. If you would like to be a part of this change, please reach out to us to learn more and join our monthly meetings, we would love your help!
