The Forest Committee launches a series of programs on Wildfire

 

The Forest Committee will be presenting a one-of-a-kind assessment of the impacts of the recent Bobcat Fire, one of the largest ever recorded in the San Gabriel Mountains. The Zoom program will begin at 7:30  PM sharp on Wednesday, November 18th.  Topics will include the fate of wildlife, endangered species, and recreation as well as what it is like to fight such a massive fire as recounted by front-line firefighters who were there.

 

Leading off the November special program will be Angeles National Forest Supervisor Jerry Perez and his team. They will be followed by Rick Halsey, President of the Chaparral Institute, who will explore the unique and magnificent nature of chaparral ecosystems and the challenges they face as the frequency of fire increases, partly due to global warming and partly due to human-caused ignitions.

You will also learn about trail work opportunities (which we hope resume in 2021) and other committee activities. The second program in the series on wildfire will be presented on January 27th, 2021. It will explore: “Living with Wildfire: What can we do?”   The Zoom event will include a look at the use of fire by Indigenous Peoples to see if there are any lessons for us today.
