The Sierra Club Angeles Chapter welcomes Jonathan Howard as the new Communications Coordinator on staff at the chapter office. He starts June 8th and will be focusing on communications, marketing, and media relations to help increase the capacity of the chapter.
Originally from White Plains, NY, Jonathan grew up exploring the trails of the Lower Hudson Valley. His mother and maternal-grandfather were both Geology majors at Bates College and instilled in him a great admiration for the outdoors. Summers spent hiking, fishing, and camping with his twin brother and grandfather in Downeast, ME, are among his fondest memories.
Jonathan received his bachelor's degree in Political Science from Occidental College. The progressive spirit of the Occidental community laid foundations for sustainability on campus and beyond, launching his career as an activist. His studies tackled questions of social and environmental justice, fostering a deep understanding of the law, policy, and democratic citizenship, and preparing him to help explore solutions to increasingly complex real-world challenges.
Before joining the Chapter team, Jonathan dedicated the early years of his career to empowering progressive candidates and advocacy organizations. As a digital specialist, he's helped clients enhance their marketing efforts and optimize their online presence. He loves finding creative ways to tell stories that boost campaign engagement using social media, email, and other online tools. Additionally, his background as a field organizer—managing volunteer and paid field staff—made him a resource for underfunded campaigns with limited resources.
Jonathan currently lives in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles. In his free time, you can find him hiking local trails, keeping tabs on his favorite New York sports teams, or testing out new recipes. He looks forward to the challenge ahead and is eager to use his skills to propel conservation efforts of the chapter forward during this 'new normal.'
