Get involved in 2018: Think globally, hike locally

The Angeles Chapter leads thousands of hikes and outings every year, many of them in your neighborhood. Paseos de Sierra Club is a new hike series that’s good for families and bilingual Angelenos who want to explore wildlands near L.A.’s urban core. To find walks and hikes near you, check out our calendar at angsc.org/activities.

Urban hikes, who knew?

It’s not surprising that most people think of protecting and hiking in remote wild lands when they hear the Sierra Club mentioned. That, after all, is the club’s genesis. However, for decades, the club has been as dedicated to bringing diverse groups to hiking and bringing hiking into our cities.

Get fit, learn skills

Sierra Club hikes range from easy walks to strenuous adventures. They provide a good path toward becoming physically fit. You can progress to more strenuous hikes as you improve and learn skills for overnight adventures.

Get social

Along the way, you’ll have an opportunity to meet and talk with other people who are interested in fitness, walking, hiking, their cities, parks and nature. Many friendships and even some marriages have been known to happen.

Reclaim your streets

Hikes near your neighborhood might not seem as bucolic as the wilderness, but don’t sell them short. Going out with a dedicated group near your home makes a statement that “we use these streets and we stick together.”

Discover your town

You may find out things about your town you didn’t know when you walk on foot. And, if you’re dedicated enough, you might even convince an elected or appointed official to come with you and persuade them to improve the streets you use.

Lift your spirits

Breaking the monotony of everyday life might just improve your outlook.
