Action Alert: Oppose the Poseidon Huntington Beach Desalination Plant

As you may be aware the Sierra Club has taken a strong position opposing the Poseidon Huntington Beach Desalination Plant due to its destructive impacts on ocean water quality and climate change. There is a critical vote coming up and we need your help!

What: Huntington Beach City Council Meeting

When: Monday May 6th beginning at 6pm

Where: Huntington Beach City Council Chambers

2000 Main St, Huntington Beach, CA 92648

(At the intersection of Main St. and Yorktown)

At this meeting the council will consider sending a letter to the California Coastal Commission opposing the project and asking the commission to deny Poseidon a Coastal Development Permit.  As simple an action as this may seem it will have a huge impact on the decision made by the Coastal Commission, as the city will be reversing its previous support for the project.  The council needs our support to send this letter.  Your presence at the meeting is critical, as the council members need to literally see the support for this action from the public. You do not have to speak if you don’t want to, just your being there will make a huge difference.  We will provide everything you need to participate including a small “No Poseidon” sign so the council members will know your opinion of the project and talking points for those of you who wish to speak.  Please mark your calendar and plan on attending.  Also please let us know you are coming by contacting Ray Hiemstra at raymondhiemstra@gmail.com so we can plan ahead for you.

Why Oppose the Poseidon Huntington Beach Project

  •  It will kill huge amounts of marine life by sucking it through an open ocean intake that is so destructive that the state is requiring the AES power plant to abandon using it.
  • It will dump millions of gallons a day of hyper-saline brine mixed with cleaning fluids into our ocean, degrading water quality and displacing marine life.
  • It will spew millions of tons of greenhouse gasses into our air accelerating climate change.
  • We don’t need the water!  And if we did there are better ways to get it such as conservation and recycling of wastewater and urban runoff.
  • This is another step toward privatizing our water supply!  Will you feel more secure buying water from a Connecticut Corporation than from your local water district?

Not a good idea. 60% of domestic water goes to landscape. We have a lot more work to in this area before we start to stress the inviorment any farther. No to poseidon.
