Protect Our Open Spaces

The Pasadena Group advocates for the acquisition and protection of environmentally significant lands, for the use of renewable energy resources and reduction of greenhouse gases, for improved air and water quality, and for water conservation.

Local Conservation Issues

The Pasadena Group is actively involved in the following local and regional conservation issues. Our Group sponsors conservation-themed outings to inform Sierra Club members and the general public about the current status of plans and activities affecting these issues.

1. Protecting and enhancing the natural habitat of the Lower Arroyo Natural Area from the Holly Street Bridge to Pasadena's southern boundary.

2. Supporting "Pasadena 100" - a local campaign to get Pasadena powered by 100% carbon free energy by 2030.  On January 30, 2023, the Pasadena City Council passed a resolution declaring a climate emergency that set a policy goal for Pasadena to source 100% of its electricity from carbon-free sources by 2030 and to utilize the 2023 Power Integrated Resource Planning process to plan multiple scenarios to achieve this goal. Key to PASADENA 100’s success is the fact that they are a coalition of 23 non-partisan, non-profit organizations and individuals.

3. Participating in the Sierra Club's San Gabriel Valley Conservation Task Force, which works to protect and enhance the land and water resources of the San Gabriel River watershed.

4. Participating in planning for and monitoring management of the newly established San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, as well as in other environmentally significant activites planned or taking place in Angeles National Forest.

5. Helping to achieve Congessional enactment of legislation establishing new wilderness areas and additions to existing wilderness areas, and designating several wild and scenic river segments, in the Angeles National Forest.
