Dr. Wendy Watson is offering a Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course on March 25 and 26 at the Iola Winter Sports Club's Chalet (aka Phil Johnsrud's ski hill) at E398 County Road MM, near Iola, WI. The class is designed for outdoor enthusiasts and anyone who works or spends time in remote environments. The course will cover patient assessment skills, decision making skills, and the treatment of environmental, traumatic, and medical illness and injury in the backcountry when advanced care is delayed. CPR will be discussed, but CPR will not be taught.
Participants must be at least 14 years old. Some of the hands-on skills scenarios will require participants to be on the floor or ground outside.
Participants should arrive by 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 25. The course will continue through Sunday afternoon. The course includes 16 hours of instruction and participants must be present for the entire course to receive the certification through the American Safety and Health Institute.
Camping is available onsite Friday and Saturday night at no cost. Participants are also welcome to sleep indoors at the Iola Sports Club's Chalet at no cost. (There are no bunks in the Chalet, but there is plenty of floor space.) Other lodging options are available in nearby communities.
Meals are included Saturday (lunch and dinner) and Sunday (breakfast and lunch). The menu is vegetarian and vegan-friendly. Participants are asked to bring their own drinks, snacks and desserts to share. Friday night arrivals are on their own for meals Friday night and Saturday morning. There is a small kitchen in the Chalet available for your use, and there are restaurant options available in Iola.
The fee for this course is $75.00 payable to 'Sierra Club'. The fee includes 16 hours of instruction, a WFA handbook, a WFA pocket guide, and four meals.
