We’re fighting every day to loosen Dominion’s fossil-fuel stranglehold on Virginia politics.
Dominion Energy, Inc. is one of the nation’s largest producers and transporters of energy—both electricity and natural gas. Dominion wields enormous influence over the Virginia legislature and governor’s office through its lobbying, targeted charitable giving, lavish spending on political campaigns, and its membership in the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).
Dominion has corrupted the legislative process in Virginia. As the Staunton News Leader observed in 2014, “Dominion has shown us the real Virginia way to get things done. Give money, get laws passed, show up at public meetings and do whatever you want.”
Dominion is the largest climate polluter in Virginia. It plans to spend billions in the next decade to build many huge new fossil-fuel projects, including an unnecessary pipeline for fracked natural gas that would destroy forever many beautiful parts of the commonwealth.
Dominion and ALEC also work to make it harder and more expensive for Virginian homeowners and small businesses to install rooftop solar power. And, through its ALEC membership, Dominion supports efforts to block or delay policies and regulations to reduce carbon emissions.
For Virginia to make real progress in the fight against climate disruption and rising sea levels, Dominion’s unhealthy influence over Virginia politics and politicians must be challenged.
