Sierra Club Applauds Federal Approvals of Virginia’s Offshore Wind Project

Virginia - Today, federal agencies awarded final approval of Dominion’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, including approval by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) for the construction and operations plan (COP).  The CVOW project involves 176 wind turbines off the coast of Virginia Beach which will power over 660,000 homes and businesses.  Construction of the 2,600 megawatt project starts in May 2024, and will be complete by the end of 2026.

In response, Eileen Woll, Offshore Energy Program Director, Sierra Club Virginia Chapter released the following statement:

We have worked long and hard to finally see this day. It was 2009 when the feds first assembled potential stakeholders to see if there was any interest in developing the offshore wind resources off our coast. Today, over a decade later, there are over 200 stakeholders involved, tens of thousands of Virginia activists engaged, and a broad bipartisan collection of lawmakers activated.

As a grassroots advocacy organization, the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter has led the efforts to win that level of support. The CVOW project is a win for Virginia. The Sierra Club is very proud to have played a major role in making the equitable development of CVOW happen.
