Sierra Club applauds Attorney General Herring’s challenge to Trump’s dangerous clean cars rollback

RICHMOND, Virginia – Today, Attorney General Mark Herring joined a coalition of 19 state attorneys general and the District of Columbia announcing their intention to challenge the Trump-Pruitt-Wheeler Environmental Protection Agency’s plan to roll back federal limits on tailpipe pollution from cars and trucks.

In response, Kate Addleson, Director of the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter, released the following statement.

We applaud Attorney General Herring’s action today to push back on the Trump administration’s reckless rollback of protections that improve air quality and increase fuel efficiency for vehicles. Rolling back environmental standards to placate polluters is a classic Trump tactic, and it’s important that the administration knows Virginia won’t stand for it.

Rolling back clean cars standards will pollute Virginians' air, put lives at risk and force people to spend billions more at the gas pump. The transportation sector is the fastest-growing source of greenhouse gas pollution and high standards are vital to effectively reduce the threats of climate change.

Trump is attempting to undermine state’s authority to set stronger environmental standards across the board through their efforts to bully California into weakening their tailpipe pollution safeguards. Because of this threat, the actions of Herring and the 19 other attorneys general also serve to defend the role of federalism in protecting our air and water. Herring is speaking out to ensure Virginia has the right to adopt California’s standards for ensuring the cleanest-running cars possible.
