CONFRONTING URBAN SPRAWL IN SOUTHERN NEVADA
On March 3rd, 2021, the Nevada Congressional Delegation introduced the Southern Nevada Economic Development and Conservation Act. While we support the nearly 2 million acres of conservation included in this legislation, Sierra Club cannot support the bill as written because of the enormous giveaway of our public land for urban sprawl that is also contained in the bill. Urban sprawl wastes our precious water, creates more air pollution, leads to more inequities in housing, and will destroy the hidden valley, bringing development dangerously close to the Sloan Canyon National Recreation Area.
You can watch a two part series by our Conservation Co-Chair Justin McAfee on the bill by visiting the Desert Guardians Youtube Page.
Sierra Club is committed to exploring the linkages between environmental quality and social justice. The proposed sprawl in this legislation would produce harmful emissions that disproportionately impact disadvantaged communities, and not create a more walkable, transit friendly community that would nurture the upward economic mobility of people who do not have access to a personal vehicle. We ask our federal delegation to propose legislation that reverses these trends, not legislation that makes it worse.
