Drusha Mayhue, a longtime Sierra Club member and a Houston Sierra Club (HSC) leader in the 1990’s, died recently.
I met Drusha via the very active outings program of the HSC during the 1990’s. She was enthusiastic about the Sierra Club and the outings that were conducted, including air and bus trips and local outings. Drusha was a very effective outings leader and was a positive force for our outings program.
I remember going on outings with Drusha to Superstition Wilderness and the Grand Canyon in Arizona, northeastern New Mexico, and Redwoods State and National Parks in California. It was always a fun adventure, physically taxing for sure, and Drusha was excited and wanted more backpacking adventures. Drusha was the one who got me back into backpacking and she loved to talk to people about how they could be closer to Nature by backpacking.
Drusha also was an ardent conservationist and was on the HSC Executive Committee and served as our Chair for several years. She worked on issues that dealt with the Lone Star Hiking Trail, Columbia Bottomlands, air quality, and forest management.
After about 10 active years Drusha moved to Montana to be near the mountain country she loved. Drusha was an outstanding HSC volunteer and her presence is missed but I’m sure is well noted up above now that she has left earthly constraints for the sky above that she enjoyed so much.
