April Program Topic:
Bayou Land Conservancy: Land Conservation in Our Growing Region

On April 11, our speaker will be Jill Boullion, Executive Director of the Bayou Land Conservancy. Since the mid-1990's, the Bayou Land Conservancy (BLC) has been leading the effort to preserve land along streams for flood mitigation, clean water, and wildlife. And these efforts have provided increased public recreational opportunities. This presentation will provide information on how BLC makes strategic conservation decisions, and how the community is engaged in supporting that mission.

Bayou Land Conservancy preserves land within the watersheds that feed into Lake Houston, primarily within northern Harris and Montgomery counties. Lake Houston is the largest source of drinking water for the City of Houston, and its watershed encompasses some of the fastest growing communities in the nation, including: The Woodlands, Conroe, Tomball, and Kingwood. There are several large waterbodies that eventually flow to Lake Houston, including Lake Conroe, Spring Creek, the San Jacinto River, and Lake Creek. Protecting these watersheds protects our local habitats, our water quality, and gives floodwaters room to flow.
