February Program Topic:

Updates from THEA on Houston Area Superfund Sites

On February 8, our speaker will be Jackie Medcalf, Founder and CEO of Texas Health and Environment Alliance (THEA). Jackie will report on THEA's ongoing work to address Houston area superfund sites. THEA is a regional nonprofit whose mission is to protect public health and the environment by engaging, educating, and empowering impacted communities to advocate effectively for the cleanup of historical contamination. THEA has labored and lobbied the EPA for years to address the long-standing problem of the San Jacinto River Waste Pits Superfund Site.

Key points from the THEA website:

Most of the Superfund Cleanup Sites in Texas are right here in the Houston area. New research shows climate change and increased local flooding could expose our neighborhoods to chemical waste from those existing sites and thousands of abandoned industrial sites.
What makes the Houston area stand out is how many people live close to old industrial sites that may contain toxic chemicals. Neighborhoods in every income level may be exposed.
