October 18 Program:

News from the National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas

Marianna Wright, Executive Director of the National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas, will provide an update on conditions at the Center. Drought, warm nights, and future aerial applications of pesticide are some of the current challenges. In August, the overnight temperatures were only low enough to reach the dew point on two days, which is a significant problem. Without the moisture, butterflies cannot shed their chrysalids.

Also, more land in the area is being converted to growing cotton, other farming, and new state laws will allow three prophylactic aerial applications of pesticide to "prevent" boll weevils on cotton, before a single weevil is ever detected.
