January 12 Program Topic:
5 Most Critical Wetland Areas: How Houston and surrounding communities can protect our most pristine wetland areas.
On Jan. 12, Mashal Awais of Bayou City Waterkeeper will discuss the importance of protecting our most important regional wetlands.
The Lower Galveston Bay watershed encompasses the greater Houston region and is home to some of the most abundant and diverse wetlands in the world. We live at the intersection of prairies and forests, and freshwater and saltwater. Wetlands maintain water quality, provide wildlife habitat, protect against erosion, and -- especially important for our region -- serve as nature's best defense against flooding. Studies show wetlands are disappearing three times faster than natural forests. How we protect our remaining wetlands will determine how liveable our watershed will be for generations to come.
