A Global Plastic Pollution Treaty:
The environmental threat to our oceans of ever increasing plastic pollution is widely recognized world-wide, leading to an urgency to confront the issue and find effective solutions. In early March of this year at the UN environment assembly in Nairobi, 173 nations agreed to begin work on a global treaty to develop policies and regulations to address the problem. Many consider this treaty effort to be as important and significant as the Paris Treaty to address climate change.
The global threats of plastic pollution to the oceans, wildlife, and future human health can no longer be ignored. Addressing the issue will require a range of strategies, including developing more circular economies, limiting the use of single use plastics, improving the re-use and recyclability of plastic products, etc. The goal of the UN environment assembly is to negotiate a treaty that could be ratified by 2025.
