December Program Topic:
City of Houston Long Range Solid Waste Management Plan, The Next 20 Years.
Our speaker will be Sarah Mason, the Recycling Division Manager of the City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department.
The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) has announced the creation of an updated Long-Range Solid Waste Management Plan covering waste and recycling programs for Houston until 2040. Houston SWMD has worked to draft a plan that will provide for sustainable materials management for the Houston area for the next 20 years. The draft Plan covers recommendations on how to plan for adequate infrastructure, increase waste reduction, reuse and recycling, and improve the level of service provided to residents.
This is a comprehensive plan that addresses the future financial sustainability of the SWMD, the various waste and recycling services to be provided, possible future landfill needs, and illegal dumping issues.
This draft plan is a valuable document; it provides citizens with an overview of the all of the diverse services and operations of the SWMD.
