Houston Solar Co-op Updates and Online Info Sessions

Solar United Neighbors is a unique non-profit that helps neighborhoods go solar by forming local co-ops. Two new co-ops forming in the Houston region are the East Houston Solar Co-op, and the West Houston Solar Co-op.  Sierra Club is one of the local non-profit partners helping to publicize these new Co-ops.

Due to the Covid-19 situation, Info Sessions for the East Houston Solar Co-op are being scheduled online.  Two opportunities to learn about the Co-ops during May are the online Houston Electric Auto Association Meeting (HEAA) on Thursday, May 7 at 6:30p.m., link here:

and the online Bay Area Sierra Club meeting on Wednesday, May 20, at 7:00 p.m.,

Participants who join a Solar United Neighbors (SUN) co-op learn about solar technology and the process of going solar. These bulk purchasing groups then make it easy to save on having solar power installed on a home. Previously SUN worked with groups in the Woodlands and Central Houston to form solar co-ops; link for those completed co-ops here:

The Lake Olympia Solar Co-op in Missouri City is nearing completion, but no longer taking new participants:

The solar co-ops are free to join, and joining is not a commitment to purchase panels. The co-ops solicit bids from area installers and then choose installers to serve the groups. The selected installers provide participants with a personalized proposal that makes the most sense for their neighborhood. Participants can then decide if going solar is right for them. Solar United Neighbors works with co-op participants and the chosen installer throughout the installation process to ensure it goes smoothly.

Video summary about the SUN Solar Co-op process:

Solar United Neighbors began its work a decade ago.  Today, SUN helps thousands of homeowners across the country go solar each year. The solar co-ops in The Woodlands and Central Houston were the first two in Texas.
