Solar United Neighbors is a unique non-profit that helps neighborhoods go solar by forming local co-ops. Their new project in the Houston region is the East Houston Solar Co-op, which had a virtual kick off on March 19. Sierra Club is one of the local non-profit partners for this new co-op.
Due to the Covid-19 situation, Info Sessions for the East Houston Solar Co-op are being scheduled as webinars. The next webinar is scheduled for Friday, April 3, at 12:00 p.m. with additional webinars to be announced. Updated details for these events will be posted at:
Participants who join a Solar United Neighbors (SUN) co-op learn about solar technology and the process of going solar. These bulk purchasing groups then make it easy to save on having solar power installed on a home. Previously, SUN worked with groups in the Woodlands and Central Houston to form solar co-ops; link for those completed co-ops here:
The West Houston Solar Co-op is still accepting participants until April 30, 2020:
The Lake Olympia Solar Co-op in Missouri City is nearing completion, but no longer taking new participants:
The solar co-ops are free to join, and joining is not a commitment to purchase panels. The co-ops solicit bids from area installers and then choose installers to serve the groups. The selected installers provide participants with a personalized proposal that makes the most sense for their neighborhood. Participants can then decide if going solar is right for them. Solar United Neighbors works with co-op participants and the chosen installer throughout the installation process to ensure it goes smoothly.
Video summary about the SUN Solar Co-op process:
Solar United Neighbors began its work a decade ago. Today, SUN helps thousands of homeowners across the country go solar each year. The solar co-ops in The Woodlands and Central Houston were the first two in Texas.
