Progress on Houston Bikeways

In the past year steady progress has been made in planning, designing, and building out a number of Houston Bikeway projects. Back in early 2018, Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis had Precinct 1 commit up to $10 million for one year on pedestrian- and bike-safety improvements on Houston streets within Precinct One.  This money complemented the funds already committed by the City of Houston for similar projects.  The goal of these improvements is to provide the infrastructure to make biking and walking a safer and more feasible travel option for more citizens and neighborhoods.  Past roadway design typically gave priority to auto traffic and neglected other users.

A range of projects are now under construction or in the planning stages in Downtown, Midtown, 3rd Ward, 5th Ward, the Near Northside, etc. These projects will connect to existing bikeways to expand the current network, and several of the new projects will feature protected on-street bike lanes of various configurations. Visibility will be increased at corners, and at certain high volume intersections bikes and cars will receive separate signal phases.  Refer to the links below for maps and details of individual projects.
