On Saturday, June 22, 2019, 37 Houston Sierra Club members and visitors met at Serenity Studios, 1331 Yale Street, in the Heights, and celebrated summer with a "Sierra Social". Good food, a free drawing for a "cool" book, a rousing talk about the Houston Sierra Club and volunteers, camaraderie, art appreciation, and lots of fun and excitement marked this "with it" event.

My name is Alex Paul. I am currently a student at University of Houston - Clear Lake pursuing a master's in environmental science. I am currently working on my thesis which focuses on micro-plastic pollution in Cypress Creek. After I graduate, I plan to go to law school and pursue a JD in Environmental Law. I hope to one day work on policies that can impact the planet.

During river trips, we often notice how the current slows down when the river flows into a lake or a bay. This slowing-down allows sediment that had been suspended in the flowing river to drop out, often forming a sandbar or a mudflat.

It was nice to roll out of bed knowing that I was only 15 minutes away from the outing I was leading. I was selfish and had scheduled the June Houston Sierra Club outing at East End Park, a wonderful almost 160-acre park on the West Fork of the San Jacinto River near Lake Houston in Kingwood, a few miles away from my home.

This outing was originally planned for Champion Lake, which is about 3 miles west of the Trinity River, opposite the town of Moss Bluff. But on May 25, the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge's Champion Lake Public Use Area was closed because of flooding on the Trinity River, which was overflowing into and through the lake.
