New Bike Lanes for Downtown and Midtown

Two significant new bike lane projects are in the final months of development and are expected to begin construction by early summer 2019. These bike lanes will tie into existing bike lanes and help create a more viable network.

Bagby Street Improvement Plan:
A new bike lane will be constructed along Bagby Street as part of a major project to improve pedestrian and bicycle access on the western side of the downtown core. This project extends from the Allen Center office complex to the old Post Office site on Franklin, and will link a number of parks, civic spaces, and City offices. The plan will reduce the number of automobile lanes, widen sidewalks, improve pedestrian street crossings, and add a protected bike lane. Planning documents and renderings can be viewed at the link below (although these are not final; the project is currently completing the actual engineering stage):

Austin LaBranch Corridor:
Another bike lane project will connect downtown to Hermann Park via Austin, LaBranch, and Crawford Streets. This bike lane will start from Buffalo Bayou, where a new plaza is planned along a new extension of the Buffalo Bayou bike trail on the south side of the Bayou east of Allen's Landing. This lane will follow Austin Street south through downtown and Midtown to the Houston Community College, and then switch over to LaBranch Street. The bike lane on Austin would be built as a two way protected bike lane. The last leg of the bike path will switch over to Crawford to align with the Centennial Garden entrance to Hermann Park.
