Each year in the Houston metro area, hundreds of thousands of mattresses are dumped to create millions of cubic feet of landfill, enough to fill two (2) Reliant Stadiums, every year! But 90% of these mattresses can be recycled.
In response to this waste, the Houston Furniture Bank (HFB), a 501c3 non-profit, initiated a mattress recycling program. At their facility off I-45 near Hobby Airport, used mattresses are dismantled and the different materials are sorted for recycling. This process diverts many thousands of cubic feet from area landfills, generates revenue from the sale of materials, and creates job opportunities for people with limited skills. The HFB Recycling Program also partners with the City of Houston and Harris County Probation Department to provide recently-released ex-convicts with employment during the critical first year after incarceration.
The HFB Mattress Recycling Center accepts used mattresses, in most any condition, at their warehouse located at 8220 Mosley Rd., Houston, TX 77075. Mattresses require a donation that is tax deductible and collected at the time the items are received. The fee to drop off a mattress is $10, and $25 to have it picked up.
