Houston METRO is currently developing a draft plan for the next phase of transit & mobility projects in the region. It is expected that this draft will be released in late spring for public review and comment. One of the modes of high capacity transit that will likely be considered is bus rapid transit, or BRT. Currently METRO has its first BRT corridor in development along Post Oak Blvd. in the Galleria area, but this likely won't go into operation until sometime in spring 2019.
Successful BRT projects have been built in recent years in a number of major cities (video links below). And more U.S. cities are incorporating BRT into their transit planning. But specific BRT projects can vary in effectiveness depending on the actual design and components utilized. It is generally agreed that truly successful BRT requires certain elements to provide fast, efficient service; these are: dedicated bus lanes, multi-door high capacity vehicles, off-board fare collection, well designed stations, priority at busy intersections, and visible branding.
Future BRT developments will likely bring additional environmental benefits with the adoption of electric bus technology, reducing both carbon and air pollution emissions.
