The Tennessee Chapter of the Sierra Club works to elect pro-social justice and pro-environmental candidates.
The Sierra Club’s political program focuses on electing environmental champions through nonpartisan, grassroots political action. The principal goals of the program are carried out by our all-volunteer statewide Political Committee and local volunteers across the state, who work to:
- Elect candidates who will support and promote environmental protection, as well as environmental and social justice;
- Hold elected officials accountable, both for the impact of their decisions on the planet as well as for dismantling systemic racism
- Raise the visibility of environmental and social justice issues in electoral campaigns. Environmental Justice and Social Justice go hand in hand***.
- Strengthen the Sierra Club’s capacity to elect pro-environment candidates at every level of government
***Our Chapter is digging into our environmental justice work to bring attention to the historic and current injustices faced by oppressed peoples and will be advocating for locally-focused transformative policy. Standing up against hundreds of years of oppression to transform our society will not be easy. Becoming anti-racist is a journey, not a destination. But we're willing to challenge racism on every front to dismantle systems that have shaped ourselves, our communities, state, and nation.
