Feb 26, 2019: Public Meeting - Memphis Wastewater Treatment Plant Permits Up For Renewal. Do You Have Sewer Problems?

Are you worried about the City of Memphis’ Sewer permits? Does your sewer backup into your house on a regular basis? Do sewers regularly discharge (overflow) into your neighborhood? Come to this once every five year meeting to have your questions answered.

There will be a public hearing on Tuesday, February 26 regarding the renewal of the City of Memphis’ National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits for its two Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs), the Maynard C. Stiles Sewage Treatment Plant in North Memphis, and the T.E. Maxson Sewage Treatment Plant in South Memphis. These permits also cover the City’s Wastewater Collection and Transmission Systems (WCTS)--the sewers that run through your neighborhood..

The hearing will be at the Benjamin Hooks Central Library in Room A at 3030 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38111 on February 26, 2019 at 5:30 pm CST.

In 2012 the City of Memphis entered into a Consent Decree with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) to correct health impacting problems with the City’s sewer systems.

Among the things the Consent Decree was meant to address were the safety of discharges from the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) in North Memphis and South Memphis, as well as problems with the collection systems that deliver sewer water to the WWTPs that have caused problems for residents all over Memphis in terms of backups into homes, and illegal overflows into area streams.

There is still a clearly defined anoxic plume emanating from the Maynard C. Stiles Sewage Treatment Plant, extending well below the Mud Island Boat Launch…

QUESTIONS THE PUBLIC SHOULD BE ASKING:

Is the City addressing the problems of backup, infiltration and overflows required by the 2012 Consent Decree?

Has Memphis paid all its penalties?

Why are there no numeric bacteria limits in the new permit?

Why are there no limits on nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen?

Why aren’t there numeric limits on mercury, benzidine and hexachlorobenzene?
