"I am a passionate environmental scientist/activist that has been a Sierra Club member for a few years now. I recently got more involved with the Robert Lunz Group as an outing leader, often joining the monthly Ex-Comm meetings to hear about other ways that I can get more involved in the group.

Although I work outdoors often for my career, I enjoy getting out in nature in my free time too. You can most likely find me out on the inter-coastal, doing yard work, or doing marsh/beach clean ups on the weekends. I am always looking for ways to live a more sustainable lifestyle and share what I learn with others.  I have always strived to create and be a part of a culture that is intrusive and brings other like-minded people together. I believe that the Sierra Club is a useful resource and voice in defending the places, people, and planet that we all know and love. The outings and events that our group organizes have been fun, inspiring, and informative. Serving as one of the at-large positions with this group would allow me to bring new ideas to the table, contribute to the decisions made in our communities, and support our organization’s mission and goals."

"I lead outings, I participate in fundraising, I edit the Web pages, Facebook, Instagram and X(Twitter). Have installed solar panels on my house's roof, I compost my food scraps, I recycle everything I can. My old car gets 40mpg on the highway."

"I bring a great deal of leadership skills to the chapter and the group. I am a higher education administrator and serve as president of the NAACP Lower Richland Branch. In those capacities, I must employ communication skills, organizational skills, foresight, and insight.

The mission of the Sierra Club mirrors my own personal mission. As a member of this global society, I endeavor to be a good steward of the earth's ecosystems and resources. I am a lover of nature and I accept personal responsibility to help maintain the environment and encourage others to do the same."

FOOTHILLS GROUP

Retirement from 40 years as a professor, 37 years at Furman University opened up the opportunity to re-engage in the work of the Sierra Club.  For seven years I served as Chair of the Foothills Group of the SC Chapter of the Club.  Currently, I am more focused on conservation efforts of the Foothills Group including Sierra Club opposition to the request of Duke Energy to keep the Oconee Nuclear facility operating until 2054. Thankfully, several talented and energetic club members have worked cohesively to maintain the prominence and success of the Foothills Group.  I sincerely look forward to continuing to work hard as part of the Foothills Group ExCom during these next two years.

Since the early 1980’s and largely as the result of my involvement with the Sierra Club, sustainability has become an important theme in both my personal and professional lives.  I finished my career teaching and researching environmental science including renewable energy.  Working to better integrate students in the upstate to the opportunities offered by the Sierra Club will continue to be a goal of my Foothills Group efforts.  It is thrilling to see our outings programs return to prominence. Working closely with the State Chapter has given me optimism over the positive influence the Sierra Club has in SC.

In the last 40 years my wife Jane and I have visited the 50 states, 57 national parks, and backpacked in many of them.  Recently our interests have focused on exploring more of SC, and in these last few years we have enjoyed many days and nights in the beautiful and protected areas of our state.

"My motivation when I first sought out the Sierra Club was to have a group to go on hikes with. I have since become an outings leader, outings chair, etc."

"I grew up in the mountains and canyons of Los Alamos New Mexico where I was an avid hiker, climber, backpacker, cyclist, and skier. For over 30 years I rode my bike to work, year-around, including 5 years in each; Sweden, Luxembourg, and France. Since retiring, I spend at least 3 hours each day outside birding, golfing, and gardening. To me "wild places" are a major part of my soul. I want my three children and six grandchildren to have the same opportunities I had. I am a natural teacher and leader. I have lead organizations that are both global and large, up to 3000 strong. I have worked with many different cultures successfully. I am a strategic thinker and a doer."
