John Lee evacuated to Houston before the storm and returned on Sunday expecting to find his home destroyed. When he arrived, he found his home barely damaged even though the street just over from his was completely destroyed.

Joseph Rushmore is a freelance photographer living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His work, specializing in environmental justice and conservation, includes field reporting from Standing Rock in North Dakota and the Diamond Pipeline in Oklahoma. When news broke that Hurricane Harvey was barreling toward the Gulf of Mexico, he drove to South Texas to document the aftermath. 

These photographs clarify the total devastation that Hurricane Harvey has wrought in Rockport, Texas.

Congress will meet soon to authorize disaster relief funding. We must make sure they include funds to help address superfund sites and other toxic releases in the area.
