Randy Johnson launched the backcountry management program on Grandfather Mountain in 1978 that kept trails on the privately owned peak open to the public. The mountain became a North Carolina state park in 2009. He is the author of Grandfather Mountain: The History and Guide to an Appalachian Icon (the University of North Carolina Press; June 2016).
