The San Gorgonio Chapter Political Committee has a mission to assure that the elected policy bodies representing the California Counties of Riverside and San Bernardino at the federal, state and local levels are made up of individuals who recognize and support the goals of the Sierra Club to protect the environment and provide for environmental justice.
The Committee interviews candidates and endorses those whose records or commitments reflect their interest in environmental protection. We then work to recruit volunteers, both Club members and others, to work on campaigns to assure their election.
Once these candidates have been elected and have taken office, our work is not over. We then work to monitor environmental legislation at all levels, bring those issues to the attention of our elected officials, endorsed or not, and then monitor and report on how they have voted.
It is our view, that if we do a good job of this, we can avoid many of the lawsuits that we have had to file due to those legislative bodies making decisions that are harmful to our natural world and the people most harmed by those decisions.
